Most women agree that one of the sexiest physical attributes that a man can posses is his height, and unfortunately for many, statistical research has found that taller men are more likely to be promoted in the workplace when compared to their shorter associates. The single greatest way to add some height is to work on your posture, but if you are looking for some sartorial tips on how to appear taller we are here to help.
Slim-Fit Garments
Most North American men prefer to wear loose clothing providing the reasoning that looser clothing is more comfortable, but this goes hand in hand with creating a less flattering silhouette. Opt for garments that are “fitted” or “slim-fit” as this will help to accentuate your body’s natural lines and create a slimming effect and the illusion of more height. Keep in mind that if you haven’t seen the inside of a gym since high school P.E. classes, and are packing a few spare tires in the gut area this style tip will not help you. Make sure that your jacket or coat does not go below the point where your buttocks meets your legs (unless it is a trench or overcoat—however if you are a short fellow you should avoid these types of coats all together.) because this will cause you to appear dramatically shorter. The perfect blazer will have well fitted shoulder pads to make your shoulders appear broad, and create that tapered and athletic “V” shape that is so desirable to women. The image below is a perfect example of what we are talking about. Notice the immense difference in how the gent looks when he improves his posture and wears slim-fit clothes!
Be Monochromatic
This is a big secret amongst fashionable gents, but if you chose pieces that are different hues of the same colour on the colour wheel, you will create the optical illusion of being taller. A good example is if you wear pants and shoes that are different shades of the same colour, this will cause your legs to appear more elongated. Along with this style tip, opt for darker colours, particularly black. Black and deep shades of grey will cause for you to appear more slender, and project an assertive and dominant presence. The psychologically intimidating and dominant nature of the colour black has been well studied and can be used to your advantage...ever notice how the sexy bad boy with women dripping off of his arms in cinema always chooses to wear black?---it’s no coincidence!
Hairstyle
Hair that is tightly cropped on the sides, with more volume up top will physically add at least one inch to your height. The next time that you are at the barbershop work with your stylist to choose a style that is most flattering for your face.
Vertical Stripes
A very well known and popular trick, but we thought that we’d include this for the fashion newbies who aren’t familiar with it. Many celebrities are actually shorter in real life than they appear on camera, and they compensate for this by wearing garments that have vertical stripes because it tricks the eyes into believing that the wearer is much taller.
